ARTISTIC STATEMENT
Storytelling is the shared currency of the world. I believe it is a fundamental cornerstone of human existence; as necessary as food and water, and it is within the art of storytelling that I dedicate my time and energy. I work under the belief that stories hold the power to create mutual respect and understanding. I believe it to be the catalyst for bridging differences. I am invested in creating stories pertaining to race, sexuality, culture and exploring the composition of identity. I am fascinated by the relationship between society and mythology and I aspire to reach audiences on an international level with my ideas. I am inspired by the infinite potential of the performing arts and I operate on the idea that it can raise the human consciousness to higher and more sophisticated levels of awareness. There is a fleeting quality to every encounter with an audience; that the first encounter can also be the last, and I honor this by striving to present the best of my abilities at each and every encounter. Tom is the co-founder and current Producing Artistic Director of Seattle-based theatre company, REBATEnsemble Theatre Group. He produces and directs plays designed to "activate theatricality in unconventional spaces". Tom has produced shows for the company in 99+ seat theatres, cabarets, clubs, cafes, tea houses, parks and warehouse rooms. As Producing Artistic Director, Tom has directed Hamletmachine (2011), Richard III (2012), Cafe Dante (2013), ICONS: The Martin Show (2014), RASHOMON: Reloaded (2015), and The Tempest (2016). In 2019, Tom collaborated with Pork Filled Productions to create NIGHT PARADE (2018); an original immersive theatre production. Tom's work is an exploration of contemporary societal structure and how it relates to mythology, folk tales and fables. Following this, a sequel to NIGHT PARADE was commissioned by Cafe Nordo in Seattle, WA. | ||
